Since our new Munchkin boiler was installed last Fall, the fan has had to be replaced four times! F13 & E13 failures. Does anyone know the cause of these fan faillures?

We replaced a couple fans on the original units, but no problems since they've beefed up the fans. What size is your unit? I would probably be looking at how it was vented. Possibly your supplier has a stock of the old fans?

We have had (2) failures on wall hung units Model# T50, problem was due to condensation from intake pipe dripping directly into combustion motor windings so we diverted direction of air and corrected problem. NOTE: Vertical venting straight up through unconditioned attic space. We assumed warm air was migrating up after end of heating cycle causing condensation.

Ok, I have a little info for you. Munchkin has since added a diverter plate to it's wall hung units. If your contractor is just replacing blowers and has not added the diverter plate, you will continue to have fan failures. A lot of the high efficiency furnace manufacturers had to do this also. I guess no one told Heat Transfer Products!

I have 4 munchkin boilers. I have gone through six fans in 20 months. I have the the diverter plates and have reducted the intake away from the exaust. They also said the fans had been redesigned and the new ones were much better. At least two of the new and improved fans have failed. The Munchkin Rep told me that it would take Munchkin 3 months to determine if it was waranty or not when we replaced the fan in less than a year from replacing it the first time. This is a fan the Munchkin rep came out and did it himself, as he felt we had installed something wrong. Based on Munchkins response to date they deny there is any problem with the fan motor. Curously is is the only part of the boiler with less than 3 years warranty.

My installer tells me that Weil Mclain uses the same fan but mounts the motor shaft in a vertical position. He has not replaced any of them so far. Perhaps the motor installed in the Munchkin is only to be installed in the vertical position. If that is the case the Munchkin was improperly designed. I feel for anyone that only has one of these in their home. You have a lot of cold nights and frozen pipes in your future.

Hi Bwil
We have two plumbers who argue about our Munchkin 1900. The original installer likes them and claims to have used them frequently but the previous homeowner ( original owner) went thru 4 fans since construction completion in April of 2002. He had a 2nd HVAC guy do those replacements. We had to install one immediately after buying the house using his 2nd HVAC guy. Now we have a real vibration problem ( low frequency vibration that sound like a truck gearing up) The original installer is returning to see if he can mitigate the hum. Will keep you posted

I have replaced 2 fan assemblies in the last 2 heating seasons. In both cases the black plastic fan impeller had begun to disintegrate and finally freeses up when a large chunk snaps off. You get a significant amount of noise, starting 3 to 4 hours prior to full breack down. Anyone else have impeller problems?

Hi, this is the first time I've been on a community bulletin board so forgive me if I'm not following the proper protocol for posting.

I have a Munchkin M80 and just yesterday 1/23/08 had the induction motor fan assembly replaced because the old one broke. Upon removal, it was obvious that the plastic fan broke. So, it cost me $621.00 alone for the new part, not to mention the labor time.

I wanted to find out if this was happening to other Munchkin owners and if they've had any response from the manufacturer regarding warranty and covering replacement cost. My Munchkin was installed in 2002 so it appears it may no longer be under warranty.

I'm really irritated that this part costs so much and it looks like many other owners are having induction motor failures as well.

Does anyone have any info?

Also, could I buy this part direct (or used) for less than buying through my service company?

Thanks

Hey All,

since this thread has "reactivated", I have moved it to the current area of the forums where people may have an easier time seeing it.

Hopefully someone with good information will notice!

I have had had a 140m since late 2003, Today is Easter sunday, i awoke at 7am to 63f temps in the house. This will be the thrid 3rd fan i will replace come monday. If you pull the plate off the impeller the boiler will run ok. When my plumber installed the boiler we went together to become certified techs on the boiler, Thank god because i would be changing frozen pipes if not. The first two fans the rep made good on, but it looks like im picking up this one. If anyone knows of a better fan to purchase please let me know. I am going to contact heat transfer products on monday because im fed up. I have an 19 month old and one on the way the last thing i need is a loss of heat. If something hapens after i contact them with a certified letter my lawywer says i can take legal action, if need be! If you buy a car and the breaks dont work from day one should i pick up the tab? I really wonder if they have the balls to read these posts but i think we need to get together and sign some kind of grievence and let them know they have to fix this problem asap!

Most likely you are recircing flue gases. In other words, you don't have it vented properly. Sorry to tell you that, but I'd bet my paycheck on it. Munchkin does not manufacture the fan, and it is used in countless other appliances. I've even been to the factory, where they had fans mounted in an outside box, and cycled them every 15 seconds or so, in extreme heat and cold conditions, with a bucket of drywall dust dumped in. They run and run in extreme conditions. What will kill them, though, is recirculating flue gases. Eeker

Post a picture of your venting and I'll tell you if it's right or wrong. I'll tell you though, I've asked several others to do the same and every time we never hear from them again. Prove me wrong!!!!!!!!!

Thats interesting about recircing flue gas. Is it possible the flat aluminum vent termination kits could do the same even though their made to be 4" center to center ?

As far as the F-09 I'm in the midst of the same thing at low fan speeds the boiler cuts out. Has no trouble lighting but staying on is another thing. In the test mode the unit fires up and stays on because it doesn't scroll down as low as it does in the start up of a heating mode. Then the inoization dips to .5 to .4 and cuts out. The only part I did not replace is the gasket between the burner and the burner door. The tech's claim the flame can get behind that area and cause it to drop out. We'll see I will get the gasket soon and hopefully it will remedy the problem. JB

If you are having problems with fans and F09 codes you should be checking the trap - it is most likely plugged- have a tec remove the front cover and check if there is anything in the coil (what I call coffee grounds) also if you have no flame detected codes check that the burner screws are tight ( flame detection is from the flame sensor rod to grounding of the burner - also the burner must be tight for the air/gas mix to go thru the burner and not thru the gasket area) also if your insulation is wet on the underside of the boiler check the trap is not weeping at the connection and check if there is pin holes on the underside of the belly where the condensate collects before the trap. If anyone is finding the coffee grounds please let us know on this forum as we are trying to figure out what it is - all condensaing boilers are having this problem but not to this degree or problem.
Hopefully Helpful
