I keep seeing this heat load calculation. How do you go about figuring? And is there a site out there that posts something on how to figure this out? Sorry for the ignorance, but if you don't ask questions you never learn. And I cann't afford to scratch much more hair out. Thanks

slant fin and others make some calculators that can be used. some of the assumptions you have to make are a little tricky though if you don't know what you are doing, and the programs I feel are rather limited in that they kind of assume standard construction techniques. However they are certainly worlds better than nothing.

Have gone to the slant finn site and figured my heat loss at 40,300 for my main floor and 43,000 for my basement. How does this calculate into water temp? My house is 1990 sq. ft.. Thanks to all in advance.

1st floor heat load is lower than your basements? That's odd. Walk out basement with a lot of glass?

water temps are determined by heat load, tubing installation type, and floor coverings. You'd need to know the highest per square foot heat load in a room to know how high the whole system water temps will get.

The only computerized programs that I would suggest would be either Elite Software or Wrightsoft. I typically use them for forced air systems but many times have relied on them for radiant floor or baseboard heating. These programs have been used by our company Larsen Tech for years doing Manual J and Manual D calculations for heat load calculations and residential duct designs. With code changes HVAC and energy code submittals have been starting to require ACCA Manual J calculation for heat loss and heat gain reports. We see submittal requirements for the ACCA Manual D residential duct designs. ACCA has only approved 3 programs that I know about for windows base computerized calculations and these are two of them.
